PRP Q&A

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains a high concentration of platelets that can help heal skin injuries. PRP is made from growth factors in your own blood. When you obtain an injury, your body sends platelets to heal damaged skin tissue.

Microneedling is a way to create micro-injuries in the skin for PRP applications. After creating tiny wounds in your skin using thin needles, your provider applies PRP to your skin surface to stimulate your body’s natural healing process.

To create your PRP, your provider takes a sample of your blood and adds it into a centrifuge, which then spins your blood sample at high speed to separate PRP from other blood components.

What can PRP be used for?

People use PRP to address several aesthetic concerns. The team at Refine Skin Medspa may recommend microneedling combined with PRP for:

Skin rejuvenation

The healing properties in PRP can promote your skin’s natural process for healing. It can trigger the production of new skin cells and collagen, an essential protein that keeps your skin firm and youthful-looking.

Hair loss

If you experience hair loss, PRP may be able to reactivate hair follicle growth and improve hair thickness and quality.

What happens during PRP treatments?

At Refine Skin Medspa, the team develops a customized treatment plan to meet your individual needs and aesthetic goals. After reviewing your plan with you, they let you know what to expect about the process.

During your PRP therapy, they draw a sample of blood from a vein in your arm. Then, they prepare your skin (which may include microneedling) before applying the PRP.

There’s no downtime following PRP treatments. However, you might experience slight redness and swelling following your session.

When can I expect to see results from my PRP session?

The results from your PRP vary depending on the type of treatment you received. For skin rejuvenation treatments, you may see significant improvements in your skin texture and overall complexion soon after treatment*. For hair loss procedures, it may take up to three months to experience the full results*.

In most cases, your provider may recommend a series of PRP treatments to help you get the results you want.
