IPL Treatment Q&A

What is IPL?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) refers to devices that emit powerful pulses of light on many wavelengths. By comparison, lasers operate on one wavelength at a time. Wavelength is important because it determines how the device can be used to treat aesthetic issues.

Colored pigments in your skin absorb specific wavelengths, which means that IPL therapy has the advantage of treating various pigments at once thanks to its range of wavelengths. Pigments break down when they absorb IPL light, then they’re eliminated as your body clears away the debris.

The team at Refine Skin Medspa uses IPL to treat discolorations in your skin, whether they’re caused by photoaging, underlying veins, or pigment disorders.

Which skin concerns can be treated with IPL?

IPL treatment refreshes your appearance by eliminating unwanted pigmentation and redness. Refine Skin Medspa may recommend IPL therapy to target:

  • Age spots
  • Sun spots
  • Freckles
  • Spider veins
  • Rosacea
  • Melasma
  • Acne
  • Non-cancerous brown spots
  • Redness from broken capillaries

In addition to improving your skin tone, IPL therapy can tighten and strengthen your skin as it stimulates collagen production. Boosting collagen is important for rejuvenating your skin because collagen production declines as you get older.

How is hair removal accomplished with IPL treatment?

IPL therapy removes hair the same way it eliminates skin discolorations — by targeting pigments in the hair follicle. The follicle is destroyed as it’s heated by IPL energy, so it can’t grow new hair.

All the hairs on your body go through a growth cycle that lasts 3-5 years, enter a brief transitional phase, then go into a resting phase. During the resting cycle, the hair falls out and the follicle stays inactive for about three months. Then, it grows new hair and the cycle begins again.

You lose about 50-150 hairs every day as follicles enter a resting phase. Luckily, only about 10-15% of your hair is in the resting phase at one time, so you don’t suddenly lose all your hair.

This impacts hair removal because hair follicles can only be destroyed when they’re in the active growth phase. You need several treatments separated by a few weeks to be sure all hairs are treated during their growth cycle.
